Black Lion Hospital Radiation Therapy
What is Radiation Therapy?
Radiation therapy, also known as radiotherapy, is a medical treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill or shrink cancer cells and reduce tumor size. It works by damaging the DNA inside the cells, making it impossible for them to grow and divide. While normal cells can also be affected by radiation, they are usually able to repair themselves more effectively than cancer cells.
There are two main types of radiation therapy: external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy). EBRT involves directing radiation beams from outside the body towards the cancer, using a machine called a linear accelerator. Brachytherapy involves placing radioactive material directly inside or near the tumor. The type of radiation therapy used depends on the type and location of the cancer, as well as other factors such as the patient’s overall health.
