Dr. Sadik Teju Sherief
Dr. Sadik Teju Sherief is a highly respected opthalmologist in Addis Ababa. He is the head of the Department of Ophthalmology and a consultant pediatric opthalmologist at Menelik II Referral Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in Ethiopia. He is also an assistant professor at the School of Medicine at Addis Ababa University and a visiting opthalmologist at Addis Hiwot General Hospital. Dr. Teju is the first pediatric ophthalmologist in Ethiopia with a complete surgical fellowship, which he completed in 2016 from Toronto Sick Kids Children’s Hospital, a highly coveted program in the world. Despite having a rewarding career in Toronto as a top ophthalmologist for children, Dr. Sherief returned to his homeland in Ethiopia to extend eye care.
Dr. Sadik earned his doctorate from Jimma University and specialized in Ophthalmology at Addis Ababa University. Growing up in an impoverished household made him realize the values of hard work and perseverance earlier on. Despite extreme challenges, Dr. Sherief completed his education with flying colors and became a hands-on trained pediatric eye surgeon after his Fellowship. In 2013, when he became the head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mekelle University, Dr. Sherief commenced an outreach program at Quiha Zonal Hospital. With his team, he did over 2,000 surgeries in just a month, improving the quality of lives of thousands of children struck by glaucoma, cataracts, Strabismus, and retinoblastoma. He kept up with his efforts and, in 2016, embarked on the HCP project Improving Pediatric Eye Health in Ethiopia, supported by the USAID Child Blindness Program to increase the number of eye care specialists at Menelik II’s pediatric ophthalmology unit. Today, he is counted among the top and most eminent eye care surgeons in Ethiopia.
